In-Situ Sequestration
In-Situ Sequestration (ISS) of uranium was selected as the remedy for the uranium plume originating from the holding basin. To achieve this, calcium and phosphate-based amendments will be injected into the ground allowing for the opportunity to bind with the dissolved uranium to produce more stable uranium-based minerals.
Efforts will be made to stabilize the bulk of the holding basin soils within the containment wall and additional amendments will be injected downgradient creating “walls” that groundwater will need to pass through. These reactive barrier walls will ensure non-contained groundwater will come in contact with amendments, thus removing the dissolved uranium and mineralizing it into a less mobile, solid form.
